In this wonderfully captured 10-minute documentary, Bryan Gavigan collages fellow long time Dubai transplants and natives by inviting them to identify their concepts of culture in a place often criticized for not having one of their own. Since drafting plans for the calligraphic “Tashkeel” (meaning ‘art’ in Arabic) ramp in 2011, the Tashkeel Studio and Gallery in Nad Al Sheba has become a spring board for artists and skateboarders. Recognizing and fostering the hybrid nature of skateboarding, art and design seem to have been key. Maysam Faraj, a skater who has grown up in the UAE his whole life, throws down his 2-dirhams in thinking about the future of Dubai’s skateboard culture,

“…skateboarding (here) has a chance to sustain itself without ex-pat kids. That way whatever impression is created will last and will hopefully grow down the road.”
